This real-time character was designed to re-imagine what Yasuke could have looked like in feudal Japan. Yasuke was the first foreign-born samurai and served as retainer to Oda Nobunaga. The idea here was to bring both cultures together, melding some African designs with Japanese designs.
The modeling was done primarily in Maya and the sculpting was done in Zbrush. Retopology was done using a mix of Maya’s quad draw and Topogun 3. Marmoset Toolbag was used to baked the maps, which were then brought into Substance Painter, for texturing.
The dreadlocks were made using hair cards. Xgen was used to generate the curves/tubes, which were then used to bake the hair textures in XNormal.
